Rail has been an integral part of the New Zealand transport system for more than 150 years, delivering goods and people around the country efficiently, safely and sustainably.

KiwiRail’s purpose, to deliver stronger connections for a better New Zealand, drives our teams every day to improve services for our customers through our major infrastructure projects.

Unseen benefits

In 2016 the Value of Rail report calculated that rail delivers between $1.47 billion and $1.54 billion in often unseen benefits to New Zealand each year.

That comes from cutting congestion, reducing carbon emissions, improving safety on our roads and savings for taxpayers on road maintenance costs.

Delivering those benefits requires engineering excellence, sound, safe and resilient infrastructure and a can-do attitude from the big projects such as building new connections or rebuilding after a natural event, to our annual blocks of line and signals work.
